Title | Letter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], Normanton House, Lake, near Salisbury, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 8 June 1925 |
Description | He thanks Larmor for a reference. He is sure that 'the vortex business' will come to the fore some day and he is enamoured of M.J.M. [Micaiah John Muller] Hill's spherical vortex and the possibility of it representing an electron. One difficulty is that it has to progress at a rate dependign upon its vorticity, but 'in these days of quanta one ought not to be deterred from pursuing anything or be too squeamish about stability'. These can be 'dodged' he thinks. In speaking with Hill, there was another difficulty, that of no circulation in the outer sheath along the line of longitude, but Lodge thinks this all to the better, giving his reasons. He has urged Hill to take the matter up again. |
