TitleLetter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], Normanton House, Lake, near Salisbury, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorLodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date10 June 1925
DescriptionHe agrees that Larmor should update his early work and publish it. He contrasts the work of [Hendrik] Lorentz, 'he grinds his results down into pap' with that of Cambridge men and that of [George Francis] Fitzgerald, whose work is easily overlooked as not digestible. Even Lodge gets ideas that afetrwards he finds in Larmor's writings. Larmor's early work is being absorbed through the work of others; a fresh stimulus to their reading must be given. He gives the example of Larmor's getting the Fizeau result on the 1894 Philosophical Transactions, but the step from the differential equation to the solution is not obvious. He offers to write to 'Nature' to urge Larmor to do as he has suggested.
