| Description | He gives thanks for the proofs, which he will reflect upon. It had not occurred to Lamb that [Hermann von] Helmholtz's proof of his vortex line theorem was defective. He must look up Young's paper. Sheet 15 was set up in a hurry and two manuscripts sheets were interchanged. Lamb has inserted a chapter end for 'Motion of solids', half-apologising for his unimaginative treatment and referring to Larmor's paper. He will have to recast three pages of the vortex motion. Now that Larmor is free in August, Lamb asks him to find a place [for a holiday], and if Larmor is still keen on Italy, Lamb will try to improve his Italian. It may be possible to combine regions. In a postscript, he states that he has had an application from a man named Heron who has a testimonial from Larmor, and Lamb asks if he is presentable person. |
