Title | Letter from Horace Lamb, 6 Wilbraham Road, Fallowfield, Manchester, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lamb; Sir Horace (1849-1934); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 21 February 1906 |
Description | He has little to offer on discrimination of the Royal Society list. he thinks that Larmor is fairly clear about Matthews, [James Hopwood] Jeans and [Thomas John L'Anson] Bromwich. The only candidate Lamb would support strongly is [Philip Herbert] Cowell whose work must be good. He would be 'quite at sea' assessing W.H. [William Henry] Young. He could not say if such people were genuine workers or elaborators of German ideas. There are many physics candidates, all on a level, so he is glad not to have to place them. People would be glad of a place for [Charles Herbert?] Lees, but he cannot compare him with others, and chemists are a mystery to Lamb. He is pleased that Larmor likes the new edition although the proper plan would have been to have two books, one of pure hydrodynamics, the other on physical applications. |
