Title | Letter from J C [John Cunningham] McLennan, University of Toronto, to Sir Joseph Larmor |
Creator | McLennan; Sir John Cunningham (1867-1935; British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 7 June 1917 |
Description | He should have written to acknowledge Larmor's kind letter about graduate degrees for Canadian graduates, which was discussed at the Conference of Canadian Universities in Ottawa. The important points are that Canadian undergraduates should not have to take another B.A., but should get a doctorate after three years of successful study. They used to get this from Germany and now from some American universities, which are near. The second point is that scholarships should be available to offset those offered by the Americans. The Oxford Vice-Chancellor has written to say that some colleges might arrange this, and he thinks if Cambridge could follow, they would get good students. The situation has changed with the War, and since the United States has joined, trying to unify their educational efforts, with Canada operating wth them. Everything shoull be done to incrase ties with 'the old land'. |
