TitleLetter from J C [John Cunningham] McLennan, Hotel Villa d'Este, Cernobbio, Italy, to Sir Joseph Larmor
CreatorMcLennan; Sir John Cunningham (1867-1935; British physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date19 April 1923
DescriptionLarrmor's letter has reached him on furlough. He expects to be in England soon and will spend time in Cambridge, during which he will call on Larmor. McLennan has worked through Einstein's general Relativity and knows the special theory well, he thinks there was 'artificiality' in the general theory. [Arthur] Eddington has gone hard for it. He apprehends it importance as a physicist, but has difficulty with the velocity of light in vacuo being the same for all observers. 'I fear I shall have to acquire a new sense to fully appreciate it'. He notes the observations from America of the late Eclipse Conference and thanks Larmor for his kind references to Toronto's work.
