Title | Letter from A [Arnulph] Mallock, 6 Cresswell Gardens, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Mallock; Henry Reginald Arnulph (1851-1933); scientific instrument designer and experimentalist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 30 May 1909 |
Description | The equation quoted by Larmor is given a slightly different notation in Thomson and Tait p.317. It does not help to determine the forms taken by a free belt between stages, assuming the middle stage is a straight line. Mallock would like to have proof that the belt does not become straight for an instant. If it does, then the distribution of velocity which he gave is the only possible one. He does not see any difficulty in the roll of cloth problem, explaining his reasoning. With regard to the energy of extension he will do what Larmor thinks best, and he had this in almost identical form to Larmor's in the first draft of the paper.
In a postscript dated 16 June 1909, Mallock says that a bad cold had prevented him from doing much work and since the paper is now printed, he will let it stand, thanking Larmor for the textual corrections. |
