Description | He was about to write to Larmor at Cambridge when he heard that he was in Ireland. The first meeting of the Belfast University may be held during the third week of November, with Mr. S.H. [Samuel Henry] Butcher M.P. addressing a political meeting at the Reform Club, and a meeting of the Classical Society. He is to be Martin's guest at College Gardens and it would give Martin pleasure if Larmor could stay with him for a few days. He hopes that Larmor will attend the first meeting of Senate. He thinks that the University will be a success, despite its financial constraints. He notes progress with the Kelvin statue, with [Albert] Bruce-Joy to execute it, and Bruce-Joy is anxious to confer with Larmor in London; he will write to the Royal Society to arrange an interview. He thinks the statue will be in Queen's College grounds. Martin was greatly indebted to Larmor for the Royal Society obituary of Kelvin, and Lord Shaftesbury would like a copy for his library. |
