Title | Letter from J Theo [John Theodore] Merz, The Quarries, Newcastle upon Tyne, to [Joseph] Larmor, St John's Coll[ege] |
Creator | Merz; John Theodore (1840-1922); British chemist and historian of science |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 22 January 1897 |
Description | He thanks Larmor for his encouraging letter of 19 January. Larmor's opinion of Merz's efforts to hand to a younger generaton a record of intellectual life is valuable. He has read Larmor's paper on geometrical methods and has found much to clear his ideas on the subject. He has received Larmor's two large memoirs and is looking forward to part three. Merz will approach the subject in his chapter 'On the kinetic or mechanical view of Nature' which has developed so much in the century. He refers to [Hermann von] Helmholtz's remarks in his preface to [Heinrich Rudolf] Hertz's 'Mechanics'. He hopes to call upon Larmor again when in Cambridge. |
