Title | Letter from J Theo [John Theodore] Merz, The Quarries, Newcastle upon Tyne, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Merz; John Theodore (1840-1922); British chemist and historian of science |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 27 October 1909 |
Description | He is obliged for Larmor's letter regarding Dr. [Thomas Henry] Havelock and he agrees with the desire to see him appreciated. Merz was interested in assisting in the choice of mathematical physics lecturer. He will speak to the Principal about how to help Havelock, but there are difficulties in bestowing a titular professorship when it has been refused to others. He thinks it would be worth imitating the German system of appointing Extraordinary Professors. Neither Sir Andrew Noble nor Mr. [Charles Algernon] Parsons have any part in directing the College or attending meetings, although they are members of Council. The endowment of a Professorship should not be less than £600 per annum, but even then it would not do justice to the best men. Mathematical physics is important, but in an industrial centre is not more important than physical chemistry or electro-chemistry, which are not even taught at the College. He thanks Larmor for helping to draw up the statutes which are not yet in operation. |
