TitleLetter from H [Henry] Middleton, New Steine Hotel, Brighton, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorMiddleton; Henry (1851-1932); American inventor
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date2 December 1898
DescriptionHe asks Larmor to answer a letter from a House Agent concerning Middleton, as he is contemplating leasing a house in Brighton. He hears of Larmor occasionally from [Herbert Somerton] Foxwell who described Larmor as a philosopher. Middleton feels he has sunk into obscurity from his inability to promote companies. He sends Larmor queries: on the ice caps and precession of the equinoxes; and if the Earth is solid, how to explain the lines joining the chief volcanic vents and mountain chains of the globe, which suggest the features of glaciers. He regrets the circumstances which have drawn him far from Cambridge, leaving him with so few friends or friendly critics.
