TitleLetter from William Ridgeway, Flendyshe, Fen Ditton, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorRidgeway; Sir William (1853-1926); Irish classical scholar
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date6 March 1914
DescriptionHe has signed the enclosed form [not present] with pleasure. He does not expect a reply from Carson but may speak to him at a dinner in Carson's honour at the Ritz. He is sorry that Larmor is 'led away by the plea of poverty'. Ridgeway thinks that much money is being wasted on pretended research, citing [George Henry Falkiner] Nuttall, and [German Sims] Woodhead. The latter 'hunted away' Charles Hose, whose beri-beri theory proved to be correct. Ridgeway does not think there will ever be a medical school capable of research at Cambridge, as they will get 'London second-raters' and there is no clinical material. 'We shall be governed by second-rate intriguers with money like H.K. [Hugh Kerr] Anderson, [Arthur Everett] Shipley etc.' In a postscript, he notes that Woodhead inserted a paragraph into his speech proof that he did not deliver.
