TitleLetter from J H [John Henry] Poynting, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorPoynting; John Henry (1852-1914); British physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date20 September 1895
DescriptionPoynting is glad that his article about the decay of charge in a condensor for 'The Electrician' interested Larmor. He ought to have said that it does not produce any external magnetic effect but thinks that Larmor does not mean this. He thinks that Larmor ascribes the discharge to an external magnetic field around the condensor. If so, Poynting 'may take shelter behind Maxwell', citing his work on the subject. Poynting thinks this is 'mere mathematical fiction' and the phenomenon is the decay of electric induction. He expands upon this, saying that he holds the view as part of the moving lines of force theory of magnetic field. He asks Larmor to look through his paper on the subject from a few years ago when he wrote about this topic giving his reasons very fully. He also sends an account of a model of residual discharge, which he rather likes.
