TitleLetter from C V [Charles Vernon] Boys, to [Arthur] Schuster
CreatorBoys; Sir Charles Vernon (1855-1944); British physicist and inventor
RecipientSchuster; Sir Arthur [formerly Franz Arthur Friedrich] (1851-1934); German physicist
Dateno date [c.1890?]
DescriptionHe will make several frames of fibre for Schuster and send them at the end of the week. Schuster will find them stronger than bar steel as they carry 60 tons to the inch when very fine. Boys is using fibres of 1/5000th of an inch which carry 1 1/2 grammes of load. He discusses the lack of fatigue and torsional rigidity and will send a variety of threads. Boys can now repeat the Cavendish experiment with an arm of 1cm., and he hopes to get a more accurate value of consant gravitation. He can repeat the experiment with small portable apparatus, making it a lecture experiment. He notes the use of melted shellac and that the fibres cannot be tied like silk, but must be 'pulled round a sharp corner'.
