TitleLetter from John Montagu [2nd Duke of Montagu], London, to Martin Folkes
CreatorMontagu; John (1690 - 1749); 2nd Duke of Montagu
RecipientFolkes; Martin (1690 - 1754); antiquary and natural philosopher
Date3 September 1740
DescriptionMontagu writes that everything is settled for their academy at Woolwich [Royal Military Academy], except appointing the chief master. As Mullart [John Müller?] is ‘a foreigner’ they may need to appoint a nominal master, on the model of the French academy’s Director, whilst Mullart will ‘receive the salary and do the business’. Montagu believes that the Royal Military Academy will be of great service to the nation if run properly and he asks confidentially that Folkes be its Director, but only if agreeable to him.
