TitleLetter from [Pierre Remond de] Montmort to [Brook Taylor]; dated at Paris
Date31 March 1716
DescriptionAddressed to Taylor at Childs Coffee House near St Pauls London.
Discussing sending his cider to England and difficulties with customs and border controls.
Mentions the inclusion of statistics of birth of male and female in London between 1629 and 1710, asking for the number up until 1715 included and asks for number of death or burials for as many years as possible.
Asks for a detailed philosophical report of the phenomenon observed in the night of 17 to 18 to rapport to the Académie des sciences.
Had coffee with [James 1st Earl] Waldegrave who sends his regards. Thanks [Edmund] Halley for mentioning him in a letter to [Bernard de] Fontenelle.
The majority at the Académie des sciences is opposed to publishing [John] Keill's piece [defending Newton] in the Memoires de l'Academie on account of him not being a Membre de l'Academie, Remond spoke in its defense, mentioning that 1) the piece is excellent, 2) [Isaac] Newton is attacked in the Memoires by [Jean] Bernoulli who himself is not a Membre; 3) An exception should be made because of Newton's importance.
Still hasn't had a chance to answer Taylor's points of natural philosophy, he is at pains to find the right terms to answer because of the current controversies. "We are more divided in physics than our theologians, although we can still see more clearly in [natural] philosophy than in religion".
Sends his regard to all who know him in England. Sends political news of France: the Regent is likely to lose an eye because of a game of Paume [real tennis]. Has just received a copy of a letter from [Gottfried] Leibniz to [Antonio Schinella] Conti.
