TitleLetter from Abbé [Antonio Schinella] Conti to [Brook Taylor]; dated at Paris
Date14 January 1724
DescriptionAddressed to Brook Taylor in London.
Sending astronomical calculations from [Joseph-Nicolas] Delisle to [Edmund Halley], especially on the passage of Mercury.
Taylor seems to have fully forgotten about Conti, but he never misses an opportunity to ask [Henry St John, Viscount of Bolinbroke] for any new of Taylor. Has heard from Bolingbroke that Taylor was about to re-marry, sending congratulations though his friends in France and Luxembourg will miss him. Has read the publication against Taylor in the Leipzig Acta [Eruditorum] which includes Conti's name in the controvery with Bernoulli. Reminds Taylor of his earlier letter on the topic [MS/82/23].
Hopes that Taylor is working on a publication as it would be the true answer to the conroversy and certain that the clarity employed will enrage Bernoulli.
Asks for the latest publications in England on physics and mathematics. Has heard that [Isaac] Newton will publish his Chronology. Includes a Sonnet for Newton on the beauty of his system in Italian at the end of the letter which will position him firmly in the controversy.

A first version of the sonnet at the bottom of the second folio is crossed out, second more legible version on folio 3.
