Title | Letter from H H [Horace Hayman], Wilson, Dorset Square, to Charles Hatchett, Belle Vue House, Chelsea |
Creator | Wilson; Horace Hayman (1786-1860); British sanskritist |
Recipient | Hatchett; Charles (1765-1847); British chemist |
Date | 23 June 1836 |
Description | He is indebted to Hatchett for a copy of 'On the spikenard of the ancients', through the intervention of Dr Bliss. He remains in favour of Sir William Jones's identification of it as Valeriana jatamansi, but Hatchett has made a strong case, convincing to a less prejudiced mind. He concurs with the views expressed in the latter part of the memoir. Wilson is glad to have the opportunity to thank Hatchett for another paper: in Wilson's official capacity as Assay Master at the Calcutta Mint, he derived useful information from Hatchett's experiments on the hardness and malleability of alloys of precious metals. |
