RecipientAllen; Henry Butler (1887-1962); American metallurgist
Date[1 May 1939]
DescriptionThanking the Franklin Institute for the award of the Elliott Cresson Medal, particularly since his work on the lightning flash is mentioned in the citation, linking his research to Benjamin Franklin's. He regrets that he cannot make the journey to Philadelphia, as he is in his 85th year and still working on scientific matters. Describes his use of the 'lightning machine' to capture images, first while a guest of Mr Alfred Loomis at Tuxedo Park and with Professor R W Wood developing the plate. Outlines their involvement in lightning research and the second form of his camera. Notes his publication of this research in Nature for September 1928. Relates an amusing incident of taking his camera through US customs in New York.
