TitleLetter from Francis Baily, 37 Tavistock Place, to 'Dear Sir' [Henry Kater]
CreatorBaily; Francis (1774-1844); British stockbroker and astronomer
Date31 March 1826
DescriptionHe sends two more sheets of the tables of principal stars, noting where they belong in the two parts of the Memoirs of the Astronomical Society. He will send others, sheet by sheet, as they are printed off. Baily has only seen throught [Charles] Tully's new telescope once, and despite the weather, it performed better than he expected. Baily thinks that if he called, Tully would be happy to show it to Kater. In a postscript, Baily sends a new table for computing heights by means of the barometer, adapted to Fahrenheit's thermometer. The table is more concise than Gauss's but equally correct. It is part of a collection of tables he is printing for the observatory and for travellers. He has sent a letter to Herschel, for the Board of Longitude, on the publication of annual values of C and D in the Nautical Almanac.
