DescriptionSends thanks for Andrade's paper on The Ultimate Strength of Metals, and for the care Andrade devoted to his papers and benevolence in reporting of them. Comments that Andrade's paper comforted him during a difficult time. Informs he lost his Berlin position in 1933 and reports on his current comfortless situation, which finds him unable to acquire position or possibility of working in a laboratory, putting a halt on further development of his theoretical work on the plasticity of crystals. Describes fruitless invitations and failed arrangements to work in Russia, foiled for political reasons. Comments that recent papers on the plasticity of crystals 'show a more or less complete ignorance of the radical change of our ideas on this object which has occurred during the last three years.-Finally, Boas and Schmid have attacked the Becker formula and my conclusion drawn from it in their recent paper', adding that 'their critics being based on a number of deplorable errors of calculation and of experimental mistakes', informing he is sending proof-sheets of a publication reflecting on Boas and Schmid's paper with today's post.
