Title | Copy letter from W [William] Sharpey, Secretary of the Royal Society, B H [Burlington House], to Sydney Williams, 14 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden |
Creator | Sharpey; William (1802-1880); British physiologist |
Recipient | Williams; Edmund Sydney (1817-1891); British publisher and bookseller |
Date | 2 June 1865 |
Description | Responding to previous letters of complaint from Williams about the Royal Society appointing Asher and Co as Foreign Booksellers to the Royal Society, which he argues has unfairly overlooked publishers Williams and Norgate, and resulted in a loss of sales. Williams has also complained about how [Walter] White communicated this information, and argues that this violates an agreement that the Society should purchase all foreign books from their publishing house. Sharpey explains that he has brought such complaints to the Library Committee and that 'they do not consider Messrs Williams and Norgate to have any grounds of complaint'. Sharpey also notes that Williams is mistaken, and refers him to a letter in which the appointment of Asher was in fact stated to Williams.
