 Ordained deacon (1827); ordained priest becoming curate at West Monkton, Taunton (1828); produced his first book “A Treatise on Hydrostatics” (1830); Professor of natural and experimental philosophy and astronomy at King’s College, London, where his efforts were crucial in establishing the practical science and engineering department (1831-1884); appointed as her majesty’s inspector of normal schools (1844); concurrently chaplain of King’s College (1831-1833); residential canonry in Bristol Cathedral (1853); vicar of Olveston, Gloucestershire (1854); chaplain in ordinary to Queen Victoria (1855); active in the promotion of working-class education and advocated the development of middle schools to be established on a scientific, rather than literary basis (c1860s).
