Title | Copy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Professor Michael Foster, Secretary, Royal Society |
Date | 22 June 1896 |
Description | Harrison has sent Foster's letter to Mr [William] Crookes. Harrison had not treated Gnezda's paper as being received as it was not communicated. On hearing from Crookes Harrison presumes he should merely send the paper back to him. Such cases seem very rare so letters of withdrawl are at present kept in the file with other letters but if Foster thinks it worthwhile, he will start a Stone's box for them.
Apologises that he misunderstood the Standing Order on the referee's letter but as he only got a few proofs to use, he has corrected it and put in Standing Order 42.
Harrison last week sent Professor [Arthur] Schuster estimates of [Joseph Norman] Lockyer's paper but if separate details of the cost of each figure are wanted these could not have been obtained in time for the meeting of the Committee. As Schuster has not replied, Harrison presumes the particulars he gave were sufficient. The estimate Harrison sent was at about £5 each; 15 figures for the text consisting of five figures of apparatus, one spectrum diagram, two photographs of prominence, one spectrum, and the remainder line diagrams, estimated by the engraver at £13 altogether. If more detailed estimates than these are required by the Sectional Committee they will have to have a new much more elaborate, and hence time consuming, system of estimating. |
