I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of yesterday's date announcing the resignation of Professor [William Edward] Ayrton from the Council of Almoners, and I am instructed to inform you that the President and Council of the Royal Society have appointed Thomas Edward Thorpe, D. Sc., F.R.S. [Fellow of the Royal Society], Principal Chemist of the Government Revenue Laboratories, to succeed Professor Ayrton upon that Council.
