The son of the astronomer William Herschel, John was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1813 at the age of 21. He was one of the founders of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1820 and served three terms as its president. He named seven of the moons of Saturn and four of the moons of Uranus, the seventh planet that had been discovered by his father in 1781.
