Description | Press cuttings and other printed information concerning the Royal Society. Compiled by the organisation's staff. Cuttings include accounts of the Royal Society's conversaziones, anniversary meetings and other events. Many of these pieces collected in this period are illustrated. Other content includes reports on Thomas Henry Huxley and spiritualism (p.8) and an inserted number of the journal 'The Earth and its evidences: spiritually, rationally and practically described...', attacking Huxley's article 'Science and the Bishops'. Other topics are highly varied but include meteorite theory (p.9) and the destruction of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing (p.25). There are some court reports and letters to the editors of the various newspapers are also collected. A manuscript index appears at the end of the volume.
Generally, the cuttings are attributed to the source newspaper and dated in manuscript. The volume contains several blank pages, with cuttings usually confined to the recto pages of the book. Original manuscript pagination omits these blanks. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'November 9, 1888 to December 12, 1889. Royal Society. Scrap-Book General. Indexed.' |
