Description | Press cuttings and other printed information concerning the Royal Society's Fellows. Compiled by the organisation's staff. Cuttings include obituary notices of Fellows of the Royal Society, notably Warren de la Rue (p.20), James Prescott Joule (p.25-26) and Sir William Withey Gull (pp.32-33). The book contains some ephemera, including a circular letter for the testimonial fund of Dr August Wilhelm Hofman (p.5); an original sketch of John Evans seated at the Darwin Fund Committee (p.15); and a catalogue of books on Cornwall from the library of Robert Hunt (p.19). There are notices of university intelligence and various honours given to Fellows. Some letters to editors are present: for example, 'Professor Tyndall and Mr Gladstone' (p.35)'. A manuscript index appears at the end of the volume.
Generally, the cuttings are attributed to the source newspaper and dated in manuscript. The volume contains many blank pages - most cuttings have been pasted to the recto side only and the original manuscript pagination omits the blank verso pages. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'April 11 1890 to October 21, 1892. Royal Society Scrap-book. Biographical. Indexed.' |
