Description | Press cuttings and other printed information concerning the Royal Society and its Fellows. Compiled by the organisation's staff. Cuttings include accounts of the Royal Society's conversaziones, anniversary meetings and other events. These include reports of J Norman Lockyer's paper on the constitution of the heavenly bodies (pp.1-5). Other content is on various topics, notably George Gabriel Stokes's election as President and the subsequent Felowship election of Arthur J Balfour (p.12). The Plymouth Marine Biological Laboratory is described (pp.19-22) with an engraved card showing the laboratory on Citadel Hill. There are reviews of the Royal Society's report on the eruption of Krakatoa (pp.24-27). Letters to the editors of the various newspapers are also collected. A manuscript index appears at the end of the volume.
Generally, the cuttings are attributed to the source newspaper and dated in manuscript. The volume contains many blank pages - most cuttings have been pasted to the recto side only and the original manuscript pagination omits the blanks versos. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'November 18 1887 - November 2, 1888. Royal Society. Scraps. General. Indexed.' |
