TitleLetter from Thomas Gold to Senator Edmund Muskie, Senate Office Building, K Street NW, Washington DC 20006
Date13 March 1972
DescriptionMr Barnes has asked Gold to write with opinions on public policy in science and technology, particularly space research. Under the heading 'Loss of leadership in science and technology' Gold states that the use of science by government to solve social problems will be disastrous in the long-term. Applications of science are seldom well understood at the time when breakthoughs are made; Gold cites the example of the laser. A liberal attitude to science should be encouraged. Under 'The space program' Gold discusses NASA's difficulties in promoting a manned effort in space. The merits of the Space Shuttle and Skylab ('probable failure') are discussed. The Shuttle will lead to the supression of new technology, since it is a long-term commitment. NASA'a role in space could be centred upon unmanned application systems, including satellite television.
