TitleLetter to The High Commissioner for India from Thomas Gold
Date30/10/1950
DescriptionLetter written at 13 Barrow Road
'I am enclosing a letter which I handed to-day to the Registrar of the University, and in which I attempt to make the position clear with regard to the acceptance of the nomination for the office of Chancellor. Perhaps this will be of some help to you.

I am now very confident of the result of an election. Many senior people here have changed their minds and now intend to support Pandit Nehru, and the general trend of discussions is more and more in his favour. We are all aware of the responsibility which we would shoulder if we were to advise you that the outcome would be favourable; and for this reason we shall get in touch with you again when an estimate of the response amongst esternal voters can be made. But at present, I feel that I cannot but report favourably.

Amongst recent notrable supporters we have Lord Pethick-Lawrence and Earl Russell. Several other influential people on both sides of the House have told us privately of their support. The possibility of a withdrawal by Lord Tedder must not be ignored.'
