A note attached from the Earl of Buchan [David Steuart Erskine] to Sir Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society, states that 'The within enclosed paper is written by a mineral engineer in Scotland of much experience in his line, who wishes his name to be conceald until the subject he trials of be examined on the Principle he alludes to in the tract.'
