DescriptionMcCormick describes a calcareous stratum facing the cliffs on the coast of Porto Praia with a general horizontal direction, varying in thickness up to around 20 feet. The calcareous bed is composed of 'a loose, coarse, gritty substance, considerably hardened where it lies in contact with the upper bed of lava'. He describes the shells embedded in the calcareous incrustations.
