17. Application for Grant
An application by Dr E M Lindsay for a grant of £2000 to convert the present 18 inch reflectorat ArmaghObservatory into a modern Schmidt telescope has been under consideration by Government Grant Board A.

The Chairman has submitted a recommendation, based on the opinions of three members of this Board, that a grant of £1,100 be made to Dr Lindsay and that the cost of the new dome might properly be borne by the Trustees of Armagh Observtory.

The Post-war Needs in Astronomy Committee, which was consultedby Sir Alfred Egerton, expressed the view that the abovematter was part of the wider issue of modernising the equipment of other United kingdom observatories which is a widespread need. As the matter cannot be of great urgency it has been deferred for considertion by Council; the more so since the funds available for the Government Grant Boards as a whole were inadequateto provided any one grantee with so large a share.
