| Description | Rejoices to learn that the operation for joining the coasts of the two countries [England and France in the trigonometrical survey] has been postponed so that there is no need to consult "the dull and heavy Council of the Ministry, to whom science its beauties and its impoertance are equally unknown". When Mudge meets with the Frenchmen can decide where to site their "Réverbères". Mudge tells him that Colonel Colby has been recalled from Scotland and will proceed to Dunkirk. Hopes to see Blagden in the spring. Application has been made on the part of the heirs of the Count de Choiseul Gouffier for certain pieces of Athenian sculpture delivered by Lord Elgin with the marbles purchased from him by Parliament but no decision can be made until Parliament sits again. Gives the history of these objects, which fell into English hands as a result of the capture of the Arab by Lord Nelson's fleet. |
