Forwarded Blagden's letter concerning experiments on steam to Mr [Davies] Gilbert hopes for discovery of reason for superiority of Wolf's steam engines. Gilbert is to visit Paris. Grieves over death of Watt. No scientific news, discusses weather and harvest. Has a parcel of plants for Countess Rumford and books for Mr Dingate, asks for addresses. Davis Straight whalers reported that discovery ships were in Latitude 72 on 19 July, ten whalers were destroyed by ice. Alarmed by report of Richie's illness, the last news was from Lyon at Seckno. Asks Blagden to convey to Biot his doubts concerning Bowditch's capabilities in Pendulum experiments, recommends Mr Fisher. Describes his health. |
