Description | Gives news of Richie's recovery from desert fever. Describes Sumatran plant sent home by Sir S Raffles, has been drawn by Bauer and Brown is also examining it. Received papers from Kater and transmitted them to Gilbert, "the honour of France in having originated so splendid an idea is more thought of than the advancement of science". Suspects rumour of gold plate from Alexandria to be a hoax. The Shetland Isles have not yet been found trigonometrically, it is to be done next year. Mudge says he had no knowledge of Gregory's "silly publication" until it was published. Davy is on his way to Naples with his assistant who will help unroll papyri. Is able to obtain Newfoundland puppies for anyone who wants one. Captain Kater has begun his work. Bowditch has published an attack on his employers for refusing to re-engage him. Fisher has been at Orkney to make observations. No further news of [polar] discovery ships. Is in daily hopes of receiving all Salt's collections including the Alabaster Sarcophagus. |
