Creator | Huggins; Sir; William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Recipient | Scott; Robert Falcon (1868-1912); Royal Navy officer; Antarctic explorer |
Date | [c. June 1902] |
Description | Discussing Scott's prior communications on the subject of the relief ship, including instructions for the ship's commander. Wages for the men have all been attended to, and Mr Weymouth has sent in an account of the sale of stores left at Lyttelton. Outlines work done so far on observational data and specimens that have been sent back to England. The letter includes orders for Scott to return to England and not continue a third season of Antarctic exploration, as this is not financially feasible.
A copy of the Antarctic Expedition General Accounts for June 1902 is included. With a manuscript inscription at the top of page 1, that reads 'Draft of a letter to Captain Scott, settled at a joint meeting of the Offices of the Royal and Royal Geographical Society, and submitted by the President for the approval of the Council. It is proposed that the letter is signed by the two Presidents'. |
