Title | Copy Letter from [William] Colbeck, Christchurch, to Sir Clements Markham, 21 Eccleston Square |
Creator | Colbeck; William (1871-1930); British Antarctic explorer |
Recipient | Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Date | 28 March 1903 |
Description | Has cabled the reports from the 'Discovery' via Reuters as ordered. Scott hopes to reach Lyttleton this season. If ice breaks up too late in the season for their return, a relief ship next season will be imperitive. The tinned food on board the 'Discovery' has all been condemned and some scurvy symptoms had been identified among sledging parties, but they recovered upon returning to the ship. Generally all on board are in good health, though doctor has advised that [Ernest] Shackleton returns. Will require twelve months' worth of supplies for the 'Discovery' and the 'Morning' next season. Left Antarctic early due to rick of becoming detained by the ice. |
