Description | The President and Council of the Royal Geographical Society do not agree that the Government should receive proceeds from the sale of the 'Discovery' as payment for its assistance with the costs of the return voyage of the 'Discovery'. Instead they should request 'moderate assistance' from the Government without repayment.
Most important is permission for coal from the Admiralty store at the Falkland Islands. If this is not granted, another arrangement must be made without delay. The relief ships will have plenty of provisions, and refitting at Lyttelton can be arranged more economically by the Societies than by the Government. A request could be made to the Admiralty for assistance if necessary. The Royal Geographical Society Council has passed a resolution that the funds drawn to ensure the 'Discovery' returns home will be reimbursed from the sale of the ship. The ship will be ensured for at least the sum advanced.
With an attached copy of a resolution from the Council of the Royal Geographcial Society, stating that £500 will be placed at Lyttelton for use on the 'Discovery', with up to £2,500 further arranged by telegraph once the full cost of refitting is known. The Royal Geographical Society is not responsible for costs relating to the 'Morning' or the 'Terra Nova', which will be dealt with by the Admiralty's representitives in New Zealand. |
