Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society
RecipientScott; Robert Falcon (1868-1912); Royal Navy officer; Antarctic explorer
Date30 August 1904
DescriptionAcknowledges the receipt of Scott's letters dated 6 June 1904, announcing his departure from New Zealand, and 5 July written 8 days before his arrival at Port Stanley. The 'Discovery' is expected back in England in the middle of September. The Presidents thank the Chairman of the Harbour Board at Lyttelton for the facilities provided to the expedition.

Upon arrival, Scott is instructed to proceed to the East India Docks where the ship will be allowed to berth free of charge for one month. Letters have been written to the War Office concerning their re-purchace of the balloon outfit, and to the Board of Agriculture to waive the quarantine rules for the Antarctic dogs. Scott's proposals regarding the disposal of the collections and instruments have been accepted, but the question of the scientific library requires further consideration. The sale of the oceanographic apparatus is also approved. The other requests in Scott's letter will be decided upon by the Joint Finance Committee. The ship will be paid off by the Secretary under instructions from the Joint Finance Committee and money will be made available for the men.

An appreciation of Captain Scott's work on the expedition is expressed, and the Presidents hope that the scientific data obtained will prove valuable.
