TitleLetter from Cyril Longhurst, Secretary, National Antarctic Expedition, 1 Savile Row, to Sir William Huggins, President of the Royal Society, Burlington House
CreatorLonghurst; Cyril (1879-1948); National Antarctic Expedition secretary
RecipientHuggins; Sir; William (1824-1910); British astronomer
Date9 May 1902
DescriptionRegarding the honorarium amount to be awarded to George Murray for his services to the National Antarctic Expedition. A recommendation of an advance of £400 was made by Captain [Robert Falcon] Scott to cover Murray's expenses due to his prolonged absence from England. The Antarctic Finance Committee understood from Scott that this amount was merely an advance and was unrelated to the honorarium. Had the committee known that Murray's absence would be so short shorter they would have issued a smaller advance.

The committee disagrees with Murray's calculations, which are based on incorrect information about Professor [John Walter] Gregory's salary. Murray also makes no allowance for the fact that he left the expedition at the Cape and did not accompany them all the way to Melbourne. The Committee recommends a payment of £337.15.0 to Murray, consisting of his salary of £81 covering 14 February 1901 to 15 May 1901, an honorarium payment of £200, and expenses of £56.

A printed copy of the committee minute concerning Murray's appointment as the Director of the Civilian Scientific Staff has been stuck on the back of the last page.
