Title | Letter from W N [William Napier] Shaw, Meteorological Office, 63 Victoria Street, London, to the Secretary of the Royal Society [?Michael Foster], Burlington House |
Creator | Shaw; Sir; William Napier (1854-1945) |
Recipient | Foster; Sir; Michael (1836-1907); British physiologist and politician |
Date | 5 November 1903 |
Description | Confirming receipt of [Joseph] Larmor's letter dated 30 July 1903, confirming that meteorological records from Sydney Observatory, relating to the South Polar Expedition, have arrived at the Royal Society. The Meteorological Council states their position in relation to the reduction of the meteorological data from the expedition. 'No provision has yet been made for transcription or tabulation of these observations'. They are 'unable to accept the suggestion that the discussion of the meteorological observations necessarily devolves upon the Meteorological Office'. The Office would need addtional staff and funding to deal with the Antarctic results, and the Council urges the Royal Society to make suitable arrangements as soon as possible. If they desire the work to be undertaken at the Meteorological Office, they will need to 'be supplied with the requisite funds for the purpose'. |
