Description | Notes that the sea journey has ended and he has arrived at Kampala to start his work [on the anthropological expedition]. Explains that he is training three native clerks, one photographer, one typist, and one seeking native medicines and their uses.
Explains that he needs the Royal Society's help - that arriving in Mombasa, he was told there was an extra £50 customs charge added to the railway charges, and when he spoke with the Governor the Governor said his only obligation was to invite Roscoe to lunch. Asks the Royal Society to approach the Colonial Office, or Lord Milner himself, as the money would be trifling to the Colonial Office but matters to the expedition. Also notes that the exchange rate is causing him anxiety as he is losing 40% on his cheques. Encloses a copy of expenses incurred [enclosure not present]. Asks that they send a further sum to his banker at Cambridge, Messrs Barclay & Co. |
