TitleLetter from Richard Strachey, Meteorological Office, 63 Victoria Street, London, to Sir William Huggins, President of the Royal Society, Burlington House
Date6 November 1902
DescriptionFollowing a question in the House of Commons, the Treasury stated its intention of enquiring into the administration of a grant to the Meteorological Council; the contribution to the observatory at Fort William will not, therefore, be discontinued, as the Council had intended. The decision to discontinue this support had been reported to the Royal Society. The Meteorological Council noted in 1898 that staff superannuation would require an addition of £1,200 to their grant and the Royal Society had been asked to support an application to the Treasury, but expressed the belief that economies might be found. The Council had considered a fresh application to the Royal Society, but now believe that the enquiry will furnish the opportunity to examine the legitimate needs of meteorological observation.
