Description | Southwell details the story of miners who were searching for lead ore in 1669 and discovered a large hole in the earth in Pen Parke in Glocestershire [Gloucestershire]. The hole which was three miles from Bristol and three miles from the river Severn. Captain Sturmy descended into the pit which was found to be 20 fathoms broad and 8 fathoms deep. Sturmy later died.
