TitleBoard of Ordnance, Lightning Conductors
DateDecember 1827
DescriptionLetter from Captain J M F Smith of Royal Engineers Office, London District, dated 25 November 1826

Met and spoke with Sir Humphry Davy as per his orders from the Board to receive his opinion on Lightning Conductors for the building to be erected in the West Indies [Caribbean]. Presented him with a model of one of the buildings [barracks] prepared by Messrs Bailey.

Davy recommended the need for sufficient numbers of copper conductors because fo the large amount of iron, and suggested a the diameter of the main conductor and suggestions as to where it should be placed, as well as other suggestions for placing other pieces of copper in each of the buildings. Should his suggestions be followed, Davy stated that 'he should not consider these barracks in greater danger from lightning than the common buildings in the West Indies [Caribbean]. '
