DescriptionCommittee appointed as a result of a request from the British National Committee for Geology, at a meeting on 16 October 1964, which made the following recommendation which was approved by Council of the Royal Society on 12 November 1964 (Minute 29(vii): 'that a subcommittee be appointed, with power to co-opt, to organise the VII International Sedimentological Congress to be held in Reading and Edinburgh in 1967, the subcommittee to consist of Professor P Allen and Dr A Lees (Reading), Dr E K Walton and Mr P McL Duff (Edinburgh). Proffessor J E Hemingway (Newcastle on Tyne), Dr T R Owen (Swansea), Dr A J Smith (University College London), Mr A M Clarke (National Coal Board), with Professor Allen as Chairman; and that Professor Allen be invited to attend meetings of the National Committee when business was appropropriate. '

The terms of the subcommittee were agreed as follows:
1. To organize the VII International Congress of Sedimentology in Reading and Edinburgh in 1967.
2. To ensure that the Congress was financially solvent.
3. To report to the British NAtional Committee for Geology from time to time, otherwise to be free to act independently.
4. To keep the President of the International Association of Sedimentology informed of arrangements for the Congress.
