7. Future of the Subcommittee
With reference to minute 10 of 18 October 1979, the Subcommittee considered the options for its future in light of the potential value of a coherent focus in the UK for engineering geology, both in a national and international context, and as a consequence of the review being undertaken by the Officers of the Royal Society of the role and need for its varying committees. The Chairman outlined the steps that led to the formation of the Subcommittee, as well as some of the factors involved and of the options currently available. After discussion, it was concluded thqt the British IAEG national group would best be managed by the Engineeering Group Committee of the Geological Society, with suitable arrangements to ensure adequate participation in the activities of the IAEG as an affiliate of IUGS. The Chairman undertook to make informal soundings within the Geological Society, and to prepare a recommendation and supporting statement (see annex) for submission to the NAtional Committee for Geology.
