11. Copernicus celebrations - Council at its meeting on 14 January 1971 had accepted the recommendations of the first meeting of the ad hoc panel on 8 December 1970 to consider possible forms of commemoration in the Uk for the quincentenary of the birth of Copernicus in 1973

Recommendations to Council;
Minute 1 - that the British Academy be invited to nominate a representative to serve on the British National Committee for the History of Science, Medicine and Technology

Minute 6 - that the report on education in the history of science, medicine and technology in UK universities and technical colleges prepared by Professor A R Hall and Dr J R Ravetz from the completed questionnaires received, be printed for distribution to Vice-Chancellors of universities, the UGC, research councils, British Academy, the International Commission on Education, IUHPS, the scientific press and historians of science and that a grant of up to £60 from the Parliamentary Grant - International Reations (Committee's reports, administration etc) be made for this purpose

Minute 9 - that a grant of £1000 be made for the photcopying of the papers of Thomas Harriot (1560 - 1621) mathematician and scientist, at the British Museum, the Bodleian Library and at Petworth; one copy to be used for research in connection with the proposed publication of Harriot's Works and the other to be made generally available for historical research in a library to be named, the appliction for which is strongly supported by the British National Committee for the History of Science, Medicine and Technology.

Recmmended subsequently by the Chairman, Dr R A Buchanan and Dr J R Revie on behalf of the Committee;
i. Tha the UK delegation to the IX General Assembly of the Division of the History of Science, IUHPS, Moscow, 17 and 25 August 1971 be Mr F R Maddison (leader), Dr R A Buchanan, Dr A C Crombie, and Dr M P Crosland and that grants of up to £210 each be made from the Parliamentary Grant in aid (delegates) towards their expenses.

ii. That with reference to Council minute 38 (xv) of 8 October 1970 the grant from the Parliamentary Grant in Aid (Libraries assistance) to Dr R MacLeod, Sussex University, be increased by £70 to cover a subsequent increase in salary of the research student.
